Dear Baby,
So I started to tell some people about your ultrasound yesterday. It seems to be that I care WAY more about it than most people. I suppose this is appropriate. Don't get me wrong, people are still happy about your arrival, but their interest in your development is more muted. I think I am beginning to see how some parents think that their kid is much more exceptional than other kids. I mean, all of the things that you are doing now, every person who has been born has already done. But for me, it's all absolutely incredible! Of course, the rest of the world sees it as "Yeah....that's nice."
Don't count on this treatment for too long though. I won't be one of those parents that thinks you can do no wrong. I taught kids who had parents like that (Ask me about Jason's mom in Korea sometime), and I don't think that it would be good for you if I acted that way.
So, today is the last day of September 2009. In about 6 months, your Halmoni should be arriving to help your mom after you are born. She is going to come all the way here from Korea to help out for the first month. I think your mom is VERY happy that she is coming. I'm happy to because I am sure that she will be a lot of help and we are probably going to need it! It will be a big adjustment having you around! In fall of next year, we hope to bring you over to Korea to meet the rest of your mom's family. You're cousin Hyunoo is about 2.5 years older than you. Hopefully he won't beat you up.
Your mom is starting to look a bit pregnant. Her belly is getting a bit bigger. When she lies down on the couch, she often undoes her pants to make you (and her) more comfortable. She has also started yoga. She says that parts of her routine are meant to help you, and her feel better. The ultrasound technician said that your mom is doing a great job of growing you, and I think she's doing great as well. She's gone through an awful lot of changes in the last year and she is so good at taking it all in stride. I feel so proud to call her my wife and the soon-to-be mother of our child.
You two are in bed now and I am getting tired, so I think I will join you. Keep working away at your development. Even though other people may not find it that interesting, there isn't anything in the world that I care about more.

I see you!
Dear Baby,
We saw you today! You have gotten so much bigger (now 7.7cm in fact!)! I saw you little spine right through your skin. I saw your little legs all stretched out. I saw your hand stretched out and looking like it was waving to us! Even got to see a shot of your little tiny hand. You have all 4 fingers and a thumb on your left hand...I saw each one individually!
You were also apparently doing a little workout routine while we watched. You were moving all around like it was nobody's business. At the beginning, you looked like you were laying down all stretched out long. Then you went to work jerking your arms and legs all over.
Well done baby. You're making your dad and mom proud!

Names and Pictures
Dear Baby,
So, one of the things that I am finding out is that picking your name is one of the most difficult decisions I have had to toy with in my mind. Actually, your mom and I have picked out a name for you if you are a girl, but we're not sure of a name if you are a boy. You have decided already which gender you are, but we can't find out for at least another month and maybe almost 2 months!
You see, it's such a difficult decision because you are stuck with that name for your whole life! Even if you hated the name and changed your name one day, there would still be some people who know you by your original name. Your name follows you forever. So we want to pick one that is going to make you happy as well as one that we like. Don't worry, I am sure we will get it figured out by the time that you arrive.
We are going to get to see you again tomorrow! Since your mom can't feel you moving yet it's going to be nice to see you still kicking around in her belly. Later on, you get to kick and punch your mom from the inside pretty much as often as you want. Just remember that is your lifeline that you are laying into.
The other pictures that we are trying to get started are progress pictures for your mom. Just shots to see how she is changing with you growing inside of her. I'm sure we will be able to get this done soon.
When we see you tomorrow, I would appreciate it if you gave a little wave or something...maybe you can do a peace sign and say "Kimchi!". Thanks!
Love, Dad

Starting the Second Trimester
Dear Baby,
So the first trimester is coming to a close. This is a good thing. As you will undoubtedly find out one day, the first trimester is the riskiest for a growing fetus such as yourself. Now that you are moving into trimester number two, we can worry a little less and simply be excited. There are going to be some changes going on that I think it is appropriate for you to know about.
First, you are currently about 3 inches long (from the top of your tiny head to the bottom of your tiny bum). By the time that you are born, you are going to be about 20 inches long from head to toe. This is going to require a little more room in your mom's belly. Luckily...
Hotel Uterus is a magical place. As you grow, your room grows with you! In fact, it is magical for many reasons! If you are hungry, you are fed directly through you bellybutton, while someone else does the chewing work. Seriously efficient. Also, you don't have to breathe yet (and the rest of us are using out lungs, like suckers). You are continuously surrounded by an ever constant temperature controlled environment, specifically designed to keep you at a perfectly comfortable temperature. At the same time, your mom complains that it's cold when the temperature in the house drops by 1 degree Celsius. I'm telling you kid, you have it made.
While your hotel room (and you) get bigger, this is going to put some pressure on mom's tummy. She is pretty concerned about getting stretch marks. It's going to help her make room for you at a slow and steady pace. You seem to have fairly good control over her appetite right now, so just keep in mind that she doesn't want to gain TOO much weight all at once. So far so good. Just try to keep things on the same track.
My friend Amelia recently had a baby (Maybe you've gotten to meet him...his name is Freddie). Freddie recently had......and accident. The lesson that I learned from this is one that I think it is important for you to know too. Pictures of fecal matter of any sort are not necessarily the most appealing to the eye. It may not be a bad idea to keep pictures of fecal matter to yourself. If you don't know what fecal matter is.....it might be better that way.
I'm now going to bed and I'm going to try to not have nightmares.

Party Time!
Dear Baby,
Your mom and I went to a house warming party last night in Ottawa. It was nice to get out and spend time with people around our own age. The one downside to living in Brockville is the lack of people to spend time with in our age range.
The house that the party was at was BEAUTIFUL! It was big and open and it had a swimming pool inside! The house that you are coming into isn't quite a nice. Our house is good for a small family, but we will move into a bigger house in a few years. Hopefully we can stay in our next house for a long time.
When I was young, I lived in a lot of homes. I was born in Mississauga. At 6 months old, we moved to Keswick. In Keswick, we had 6 different houses. At around age 9, we moved to Newmarket, where I had 3 different homes. At age 14, we moved to Brockville. At age 18, I moved to Ottawa to go to university. So as you can see, before I was 15 years old, I had lived in 11 different homes. That isn't the kind of living situation that I want for you. I hope that I can provide an environment where you can meet friends when you are very young and grow up with them. I think that kind of stability will be good for you.
Your mom and I are pretty excited for the 29th of September. We get to see another picture of you! This one might be a 3 dimensional one where we can actually see your face for the first time! You are growing very quickly. You are about the size of a peach now (But hopefully not as round as one). In around 8 weeks, we are going to get to find out if you are a boy or a girl! Exciting times ahead!

Maternity Clothes
Dear Baby,
Well, you've officially started to affect your mom and dad in a different way. Straight through our pocketbook! Your mom bought her first maternity jeans today. If I do say so, they are awesome. Think normal jeans with a GIANT elastic band on the top instead of belt loops. I think that your mom was skeptical at first but when she put them on she told me that they were very comfortable. She put them on and stuck her tummy out to try to look more pregnant. This is when I discovered one of your mom's hidden talents. Your mom can make herself look 6 months pregnant in a flash. It really gave us a good picture of what those pants are going to look like in a couple of months. I'm convinced that your mom is going to wear them whenever she feels hungry so that she can not be held back by tight pants. It's like Joey in Friends on Thanksgiving. "Here come the meat sweats!" I guess that one might be before your time.
Now, as for the pocketbook. Your mom looked at a couple of pairs of pants and had a pair picked out. Then the sales person mentioned that we should check out the "Clearance" clothes in the back. So we did. There was one rack of clothes listed "As Is" meaning that there is generally something wrong with the clothes. We saw shirts with holes, clothes with dye stains...then this pair of maternity jeans. It was marked as 90% off. So I start looking for something wrong with them but I can't find anything. Your mom does the same and she can't find anything. So in the end, we bought the clearance pair instead of the regular pair. It set us back a whole $3.90. If the pants make it through the wash without falling apart, I think we came away the winners in that transaction.
So the lesson of the day is that a lot of the stuff in the clearance rack is crap...but every once in a while you can find a gem, so it doesn't hurt to take a quick look!
Your mom is lying in bed reading. It's 10pm and she is still awake! She's gained a little weight this week and she is telling me that it's because of you. She's going to be so cute as the months go by. She will get a little round face and a big round belly. Next week, we are going to get a picture of your mom's belly and each month we will take new pictures. Maybe I will put them in here so that one day you will understand why you owe so much to your mom.
Sleep well Baby.

It's All About Cycles
Dear Baby,
Everything has ups and downs. Life is no exception.
For example, at work recently, I have been going through some lows. It's very frustrating when you are trying to work hard and help people out and all they do is put their guard up. It's a bit like running up a really fast downward escalator. Today, there seemed to be a bit of a rebound though. I talked to a group of people and they seemed much more receptive in listening to what I had to say. You have to stick it out through those downs in order to make it to the next up.
Writing about this got me thinking about my lowest lows and my highest highs in life. The lowest lows are hard to go back and think about...but they are important to remember. The highest highs are a lot more easy.
I would have to say that my lowest low was when I was 13 or 14 years old. Your teenage years can be fun, but they can be tough too. Your Grandma and Opa split up when I was 11. I didn't see it coming at all and it hit me like a ton of bricks. When I was 13 or so, I was living with your Opa and Nana Lynn. I was also living with your uncle Paul, uncle Rob and aunt Andrea. I became really depressed. I was so depressed that I began to wonder what I had left to live for. For a couple of months, I thought about ending my own life every day. I still don't know what really shook me out of it. Obviously now, I understand all of the great things to live for in life, but when you are a young and confused teenager, it is hard to see past the darkness when it surrounds you.
I think that most teenagers go through tough periods like that. If you find yourself feeling that way, I hope you know that your mom and I are going to be here for you. We can help you go through those dark tunnels and we will enjoy seeing you come out even stronger on the other side.
As for my high points...those were much more recent. The first one has to be marrying your mom. Never did I think that such a great woman would subject herself to my harassment for a lifetime! The next was seeing your heartbeat for the first time. You won't understand that one until you have a child of your own.
I can't wait to replace those old highs with a new one. All of the anticipation and excitement of your arrival is great, but when I get to hold you in my arms for the first time....I'll be able to look down on Mt. Everest.
Your mom is sleeping, as usual for this time of night (10pm), so hopefully you are enjoying a restful sleep too.
Love, Dad.

Mom's Birthday
Dear Baby,
Yesterday was your mom's birthday! She turned 30 years old (I know, SUPER OLD). A lot of people don't like the change over from their 20s to their 30s. I think it is because in your 20s, you still have an excuse to be an idiot. Once you hit 30, people expect you to be more of an adult. You're mom took it extremely well, and with good reason...
She pointed out to me that she had great years in her 20s. She started out partying hard in University. She successfully graduated from Environmental Science (which she went ahead and never used). She got to travel all over the world. She learned a lot more English. She met me. She got married. She moved to Canada. She got her first house and car. And just squeaking in under the wire is the fact that she got pregnant with you. I would say that she had a VERY successful 20s! Well done mom...Well Done.
It got me thinking about my 20s. Am I satisfied with where I have gotten to? I also started off in university (but not partying as much as your mom did). I graduated from Engineering (which I also never used). I traveled through Europe and East-Asia. I taught English in Korea for over 2 years. I met your mom. I got married. I got my first house and car. I started a career that I will hopefully retire from one day. And I got to see a picture of my first child. I would say I am happy with that so far. I am not even 27 yet! I still have 3 years to make my 20s great! I have no doubt in my mind that the last 3 years will blow away the first 7 years with you being around.
I think that your mom and I's 20s should be a lesson for you. You are going to come out of high school thinking that you have a good beat on where you are headed in your life. The reality is that you don't. But that's ok. I think that when you are little, you learn how to co-exist with others. In your teen years, you start to find out who you are. In your 20s, you start to figure out where you fit into the world. So, the lesson is that if you work hard and keep a good head on your shoulders, it won't matter where you think you are headed. You will end up right where you are supposed to be.
As for what your 30s are for...I haven't figured that out yet. Maybe you can ask your mom. She's much older and wiser than your dad...

An Outpour
Dear Baby,
Wow, you are causing quite a stir these days. Even as I type this note, I am getting message after message on Facebook.
You see, Facebook is this ancient form of communicating with your friends and family over something called the "Internet". My guess is that Facebook will be long gone before you are old enough to be reading this. If there is something called "Twitter" is still around when you are old enough to read this, then I apologize for bringing you into such a sad world.
I said yesterday that I would put your picture up for you to see, so here
it is:
No, you mom didn't eat a giant Lima bean...That's you! You can't really see your arms and legs too well, but trust me, they are there. We are going to be going for another kind of ultrasound in a few weeks, so hopefully we can get a better picture of you then.
Since you are in the whole development process. Your mom and I have some requests. We feel that they will be beneficial to you. Take advantage of your mom's eyes, hair and complexion. Take advantage of my height. Regardless, you are probably out of luck for long legs, because we both have short legs for how tall we are. Sorry about that.
It's a strange thing that happens at the big moments in your life. I'm sure that you will run into this so maybe you will read this and expect it. When your mom and I got married, we had a lot of people send us our congratulations and well wishes. Now that we are having you, we are getting even more of the same. I think there is something about those magical moments in a person's life that other people want to be a part of it. Getting married to your mom was one of those moments. Having you is one of those moments and even though you are about the size of my index finger, you are creating this moment. You see, it is not just us who want to meet you. Since you are a mix of Korean and Dutch, everyone wants to see just how cute you are going to turn out to be!
Sleep well baby.
Love, Dad

A New Daily Regimen
Dear Baby,
So, tomorrow morning, I start my training for your entrance into the world. I'm getting up (voluntarily) at 6:30am to hit the gym before work. I figure this is good practice since you probably aren't going to let me sleep in for the next 12 years. Then I am going to be dragging your butt out of bed when you become a teenager.
Your mom is starting her English courses again tomorrow. She has worked remarkably hard at improving her English since she came to Canada with me back in December 2008. Right now, she's taking 3 different courses. You, however, are going to have it made. You are going to be raised both English and Korean. Believe me, there are some parents back in Korea who would sacrifice a couple of toes to have that opportunity for their child. We're even considering putting you into a french immersion school so that you can be trilingual. We've got a few years to mull that one over though.
More and more people are finding about about you. Everyone is very happy for us to be having you. Our family and close friends understand just how important you are to us already. I think about you throughout the day. I think about how our lives are going to change. I look at other parents with their kids and think about how I will treat you in similar situations. I think about your mom and how wonderful of a mother she is going to be. Hopefully, one day, you will understand just how lucky you are to have your mom. I hope there isn't a day in my life where I don't appreciate having your mom as my wife and the mother of my child/children (sorry, you aren't the only one in the grand plan).
Well, I hope you are enjoying you stay in Hotel Uterus. Maybe I will get our first pictures of you in here soon for you to see one day...

An Introduction...
Dear Baby,
To be honest, I have been thinking about doing this for a while. I thought it would be interesting to get my thoughts down somewhere and pass them along to you one day. Maybe I think that it will help you when you have a child of your own one day...maybe I think it will just help me. It could be that you will just feel awkward if you ever have the opportunity to read this, but for now you are about the size of a plum, so you don't get much say in the matter.
I guess I should start by telling you what you are doing right now. You are with your mom, resting snugly inside her belly while she sleeps. Your mom is really good at that, she sleeps a lot these days(not to mention feeling nauseous, bloated and dizzy...yet she still loves you). Your mom is just over 11 weeks pregnant with you, so you have a long time left being inside of her. Don't let that fool you though. You have already made a huge impact on both of our lives.
We had our first ultrasound on Wednesday (Sept 9, 2009) and got to see our very first picture of you. You look like a little white shadow of something that could be human on the bottom of a big black blob. You may not think that sounds like something to get excited about, but you mom and I were both elated to see you. Then we got to see your heart beat (because you are currently see-through). It was pumping away at 140 beats per minute! I don't really know how to explain the feelings that I felt to see those pictures. I've never felt anything quite like it. All I really know for now is that it was a great moment that I will never forget.
What I need for you to do for now is to keep on growing! We'll do our best to give you a good environment to grow in and you just do your thing. I can promise you that your mom and I are incredibly excited to meet you! You are due April 2nd, so we will see how that works out. In the meantime, I will continue to fill you in on what your mom and I up to as you come into our lives.
