Dear Baby,
Another day that was full of emotion. I woke up all anxious and tried to go into work for a while. I couldn't really concentrate on the tasks at hand, so I came home. The reason for my distraction was that we had another ultrasound to see how healthy you are and to find out if you are a girl or a boy! The most important thing was to know that you are healthy, but once that was all checked out, the technician told us that you are a baby boy!
I'm not sure that I can properly describe the feeling of finding out that I am going to have a son...It means that I am going to have to be the primary source for you on how to become a man! That's a lot of responsibility on my shoulders! I don't want you to grow up to be some screwed up kid! Assuming we have another baby, you are going to be the one who is looking out for your little brother or sister! That's a lot of responsibility on your tiny shoulders! I'll make a deal with you...we'll do our best to figure it out together. There's going to be a lot of learning on the fly for you and me over the next couple of decades, but I have faith that we can get it right!
I think that your mom and I really would have been thrilled with either result, but somewhere deep down inside, I think every man wants to have a baby boy. This situation works out perfectly because when you get a little brother or sister down the line, I won't be leaning one way or the other about it.
Of course, this led to the conversation of what your name will be. We had a really hard time coming up with a name for a boy that made us happy. If you end up with a little sister down the line, we will have her name ready. For a boy we had a much harder time. We wanted to pick a Korean name that works in English, but it was hard to find one that we were happy with. We even considered Koda (KOrea - canaDA) but it didn't sit right. We seem to have settled on one that we are both happy with but after we let it simmer for a couple of days, who knows if that will change. For now, we will continue to call you Bang-ya.
Now, one last thing. We have a tradition in both of our families to have big babies. Your mom and her brother were both around 9-10lbs and your Uncle Paul and I were around the same, I believe. Really...that's just mean. Don't be that mean to your mom! A healthy 7.5lbs is good for everybody! Just wanted to put that out there.
Daddy's little boy.....I can't see myself getting tired of that idea anytime soon....
Love,
Dad

A Year Together
Dear Baby,
Your mom and I are celebrating our 1st anniversary today. I have no idea where a year went. We were so busy this year and it went by so fast! Let's do a little recap:

November 8th, 2008 - Your mom and I got married. The day of your marriage is a surreal one. You put so much work and preparation into trying to get everything right, and then when the day comes, none of the little problems really matter. It goes by in a flash. The day ends up mattering much less than the end result, in that you end up married to the person that you want to grow old with.
November 2008 - Your mom and I went on a honeymoon that has to rank up pretty high on the list of "What the hell was that" honeymoons. Started out beautifully, on one of the most beautiful islands in the world (Koh C
hang in Thailand). Three days in, I got some kind of intestinal virus that made me sick enough to lose 15 lbs in 7 days. Upon taking medicine for my stomach, I broke out in a rash. Not knowing I was having an allergic reaction, I continued to take the medication until I found out from a transvestite pharmaci
st that my laboured breathing meant I was close to going into anaphylactic shock. Of course this was rock bottom, right? No, no...upon trying to return home the Bangkok airport was taken over by protesters in the first international airport takeover of it's kind in the world. Rock Bottom? Oh, not yet! During our 30 hour bus ride to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, we ended up with an uscheduled 7 hour layover in southern Thailand. At that time, there was a very strict "DO NOT EVEN PASS THROUGH THIS AREA" warning from the government of Canada. So we hid in a Sizzler for about 4.5 hours.
December 2008
We escaped Thailand and made it back to Korea. Then we had the very difficult process of moving your mom to Canada. Your mom loves her family very, very much and it was not easy for her to say goodbye to them and move to the other side of the world. Luckily my side of the family have been so welcoming, and your mom has been able to keep in touch with her family in Korea very often. You mom grew to love Canadian winter!
January 2009
I started training to be a financial advisor. I was starting a real, adult job for the first time in my life!
February 2008
We bought our first house! We got totally screwed on our first year mortgage rate, but we had a house of our own! We re-did our floors and painted all of the walls before we moved in. Your mom had to take on a lot of the work because I had to go to my job every day. She was a trooper!
April 2009
We found out that your mom was pregnant for the first time. We were SO excited for your mom to be pregnant, but there was no baby growing inside (it's called a blighted ovum). Now, you may wonder why I would tell you this. Well, first of all, I think it is important for you to know that miscarriages happen. It happened to us, and it has happened to people I know. The important thing is that if you still want to have a baby, you most likely can...and you will be doubly as thankful when you see that little heartbeat for the first time!
July 2009
Your mom's family came to visit at the end of July and stayed for 1 month. It was a fun but very busy month! We traveled around to a lot of places including Niagra Falls, Toronto, Ottawa, Quebec City and Brockville. It was nice to show your mom's family where your mom was living and for them to meet more of my side of the family.
August 2009
We found out about you!!! I don't think I need to say much more than that!
Between August and now your mom and I have both celebrated birthdays. I've been working at doing a good job in my business and your mom's been working hard at her English classes and making sure that our house is a home. A year sure has gone by quick and you are going to be sharing our time so soon! You will bring all kinds of new challenges to our lives but we both embrace those challenges. I can only hope that every other year that I am married to your mom will be as happy or happier than our first year together.
Love,
Dad

Happy Halloween!
Dear Baby,
Happy Halloween! In a few years you will be going around to houses to get candy from people with all the other kids. Afterward, you will share your candy with your mom and dad! It's actually pretty rainy outside today, but it is supposed to clear up around the time that kids will go trick-or-treating. It's our first Halloween as home owners, so we get to give out candy to kids for the first time! Hopefully we don't get too many of the punk older kids. I think that 10 years old should be the limit. Older than that and you are just being greedy.
We had another doctor's appointment this week. We got to hear your little heart beating away in your mom's belly. It was beating at a healthy, strong 140 beats per minute! Your mom is perfectly on track for her weight gain (which I think gave her some relief). We also booked our 20 week ultrasound for November 16th! We will get to find out if you are a girl or a boy! Let's not give us any big surprises alright...I know that telling the gender of a baby is not an exact science, so don't be bashful. We want a nice clear picture of your.....gender specific area.
We are going to be busy over the next few weeks with a couple of visits to Ottawa and a trip to Toronto, so I think your mom and I will mostly relax this weekend. Hope that you enjoy the chocolaty amniotic fluid tonight!

4 Down, 5 To Go
Dear Baby,
So yesterday officially marked the end of 17 weeks, also known as the 4 month point. That means that we have 5 months left until you join us! The 5th month is an exciting time for us for a couple of reasons. First, your mom will likely feel some of your movement this month! It may take a few weeks, but it will be exciting for her to feel that, for sure. The second is that we are going to be able to find out if you are a girl or a boy this month!
This is something that everyone feels that they should chime in on. Everyone keeps asking "Are you going to find out if it is a girl or a boy?" When I tell them yes, they either agree and say that it makes sense to do so, or else they act all disappointed and say that we are ruining the surprise. I can't help but wonder what they are trying to accomplish. Are they trying to guilt me into changing our mind on it? Am I going to be any less thrilled to be holding you in my arms the first time? Am I not going to have a great surprise when we find out in a few weeks what you are? If people want to wait until their baby is born to find out the gender, then I don't tell them that they are wrong to do so. You're mom and I had no hesitation about weather we wanted to find out early. We are going to, and other people can live with it.
Moving along....
So you are getting bigger, and helping your mom to do the same! We took pictures of your mom at 3 months pregnant, and then again last night at 4 months pregnant.

Isn't she beautiful? I don't think she can wear the jeans from the first picture anymore without her "bellyband" (thank you Amelia!). Your mom and I both really enjoy that she is looking more pregnant, and I think it is making her glow. She's going to love you more than you could possibly understand (in fact, she already does!)
We gave you a nickname the other day. This is common practice in Korean to name your unborn child with a nickname. Yours is "bang" (with a soft a sound, not like the sound of a gun). In Korean it would be 방. It is one of my favorite Korean words because it is fun to say. It actually means "bread". I thought this suited well because you are like bread in an oven which is slowly rising and getting bigger. We are also talking to you more so that you get used to our voices...not sure if you can hear it yet or not, but I'm sure it doesn't hurt....
Hopefully you are enjoying your time in your expanding home. Keep up the good work!
Love,
Dad

Self Doubt
Dear Baby,
I've had a series of dreams lately and they all seem to surround one main topic - self doubt. I've had dreams where I couldn't protect you and your mom. I've had dreams where we didn't have enough money for our house....you get the idea. I think that it all comes back to this whole concept of being able to support you coming into our family.
With my job right now, income can be sporadic. While that will eventually change, for now it is a reality. We are doing ok with just the two of us and I am sure we will be alright when you come along, but there is always that little bit of self doubt in my mind. If you are like me, you will have all of the "What if" scenarios playing out in your head all the time and that can mess with you! With the roles that your mom and I have carved out for ourselves in our marriage, I am going to be the one that is bringing in the money into our home. It was scary to think of supporting your mom and I, and even scarier now to think of having someone else who is going to be dependent on me to get the job done.
From the experiences that I have had in my life, I can tell you that when you have self-doubt, you can't let it hold you back. You are going to have self doubt about so many changes in your life. It could be starting school, meeting friends, starting dating, choosing a career, choosing someone to marry...the list goes on. When you aren't sure if you are going to be able to do something, embrace the challenge. Take a look at what lies before you and think about the positive ways that the change is going to affect your life, and then go out and get the job done. It won't necessarily be easy, but it's the effort that you put into things that makes you appreciate them.
You are my next great challenge. I have to take a baby and help it to grow and learn how to become a good person. I can't imagine anything that will be more difficult to do in my life. It is going to take years of my commitment to see you through the ups and downs of your life and mine to make sure that you come out on the other side as a successful adult. But you know what? I embrace the challenge. I'm committed to the cause and I know that every ounce of effort that I put into helping you grow is going to be returned ten-fold with appreciation for who you will become.
Have a good sleep.
Love, Dad.

Thanksgiving 2009
Dear Baby,
This is a couple of days early, but your dad is going to be pretty busy between now and the weekend. It's just about Thanksgiving (and also my birthday). Your mom and I are going to your Grandma's house for the weekend. I am going to take your mom for a REAL apple picking excursion. We are going to do a hay ride, and feed horses...maybe see some deer, and pick apples of course! I am taking her to the place that I used to go with my parents when I was young. It should be a fun time!
Thanksgiving is a time to think about what you are thankful for. So here is a short list of my top 5 things that I am thankful for:
5. My job. It can be a real pain in the butt sometimes, but I know that in the future, it is going to give me the opportunity to do something that I really enjoy. It will also give me a lot of flexibility in my work schedule, so that I can make sure that family comes first.
4. My Oma. At 88 years old now, we are kind of working on borrowed time so I appreciate the time that we get to spend with her. Hopefully she will stay healthy enough that you will have a chance to get to know her a little bit. She's been looking forward to your arrival for about 5 years now!
3. Your grandparents (Korean and Canadian). They are all so supportive and there for your mom and I if we ever need anything. They welcomed your mom and I's relationship with open arms. Your mom's parents were so understanding when we decided to move to Canada, and my parents have been so helpful in getting us adjusted to life back in Canada.
2. Your mom. I don't know how I would be running my life without her in it. Having your mom around is what makes our home a home. She treats me so well and always tries to bring me up if I am down. There isn't a woman in the world who could do a better job of being my wife.
1. YOU! How could I not be thankful for you? Having you in my life, while exhausting, will be awesome. Your mom will be 15 weeks pregnant tomorrow, so there is only 25 more to go. I'm sure it's going to fly by, but I can't wait to meet you!
So baby, happy Thanksgiving. I hope you enjoy your turkey-flavoured amniotic fluid!
Love, Dad.

New Trick
Dear Baby,
Well kiddo, you have learned a new trick. You are successfully keeping your mom (and in turn me) awake throughout the night! Hurray.
It all started with a show on T.V. called "The Doctors". The gynecologist on the show said that sleeping on your stomach is an easy no-no to figure out when you are pregnant, not that it would be comfortable anyway. She also said that sleeping straight on your back isn't good either. It's because it restricts blood flow to the baby. Your mom is a die-hard back sleeper. She can get into bed and lie in one spot on her back for the entire night. She doesn't wake up for anything. All of this has changed now because your mom is trying to sleep on her side. She is a lot more restless and wakes up a lot more regularly. I am different. I am a light sleeper, who was already tossing and turning all night on my own. So now that your mom is tossing and turning as well, we are doing a wonderful job of keeping each other up. I can only imagine what it is going to be like when you are sleeping in a crib nearby and repeatedly waking us up to be fed. The sacrifices you make as a parent!
It is going to be thanksgiving this weekend. It will also by my birthday! I will be a whopping 27 years old. I didn't think much about turning 26 but 27 seems like a bigger change. Your moving away from your free-flowing early 20s and into the more responsibility-laden late 20s. When your Opa was my age, he already had your uncle Paul. When your Grandma was my age, I was already 2 years old, and your Uncle Paul was 4! While I am super excited for you to be on your way, I can't imagine having a 2 and a 4 year old by now! That's a lot of pressure on someone who is so young. I guess some people are ready for it at that point. In some ways, I probably was ready too, but I am happy that you have come around now instead of earlier.
This brings me to another point. If you are a girl, I don't know what the heck I am going to do when you are a teenager. I know teenage boys all too well. They are NOT TO BE TRUSTED! I suggest baggy jogging suits. If you are a boy, then we will have a talk when you get older.
Well, I am off for a hopefully more restful night. Keep up the good work!
